Livestock guardian dogs: protectors of the countryside

A mastiff guarding a flock of sheep

One part of my work that not many people know about is what I do in the countryside, with farmers and farms that rely on their dogs to protect their livestock. It's a very different world from that of the city dog, and I find it fascinating.

Guarding isn't the same as herding

People often mix them up. A herding dog moves and directs the flock following the shepherd's commands. A livestock guardian dog lives with the animals and defends them from predators and intruders. It doesn't move them: it looks after them.

In Spain we have a long tradition of breeds like the Spanish mastiff and the Pyrenean mastiff: big, calm and very independent dogs, bred for centuries to live alongside flocks.

They're raised with the livestock

A good guardian dog grows up among the animals it will protect. From puppyhood it learns to live with them, respect them and see them as its group. That bond is what makes it stay with the flock as an adult and defend it without anyone telling it to.

One of the most common mistakes is treating it like a companion dog in its first months. If it spends more time with people than with the livestock, the bond it forms is with us, not with the flock.

A special character

These are dogs that make their own decisions. They aren't constantly trying to please, and they don't respond like an obedience dog. That doesn't mean they can't be trained. They need a few clear basics: accepting handling, walking on a lead, letting the vet examine them and knowing how to behave around the people on the farm.

What they do well and where things can go wrong

When they're working well, their presence alone puts off many predators. But problems can come up too: dogs that wander too far, play too roughly with calves or lambs, or are very wary of visitors and walkers. Most of these can be improved with good management and patience.

How I help farmers

I work with families and farms to assess each dog, fine tune how the puppies are raised with the livestock and correct problem behaviours, always respecting the dog's guardian nature. If you have livestock guardian dogs and could use a hand, get in touch.
