How I work: getting results with every dog
When a family calls me, they're almost always worn out. They've tried advice from the internet, from friends or from another trainer, and the problem is still there. What matters most to me is that by the end, the change shows in their everyday life and stays that way. This is how I work to make that happen.
1. First I get to know the dog and the family
I don't start with exercises. I start by watching: how the dog moves around the house, how they react out on the street, what their routine is, how much exercise they get, how they sleep. I also listen to the family: what worries them, how much time they have and what they're hoping for. A plan that doesn't fit real life is no use, however good it looks on paper.
2. I look for the reason why
A dog that barks at other dogs might be scared, frustrated or simply have too much energy. Each cause needs different work. That's why I don't use one recipe for everyone. I take into account the dog's breed, age, history and health. Sometimes the first thing I recommend is a trip to the vet, because pain can change behaviour a lot.
3. A short, clear plan
We finish the first session with just a few well explained exercises that take ten minutes a day. I'd rather a family did three things well than tried ten things half heartedly. I teach you as much as I teach your dog, because you're the one who'll be with them every day.
4. We work where the problem happens
If the problem shows up on walks, we work on walks. If it happens when visitors arrive, we practise with visitors. Dogs learn better in real situations than on a training field.
5. No punishment, plenty of consistency
I use positive reinforcement and read the dog's body language. I don't use lead jerks, choke chains or prong collars. Punishment might stop a behaviour in the moment, but it doesn't teach the dog what to do instead and often leads to fear or mistrust. Consistency, on the other hand, builds habits that last.
6. Follow up until the change sticks
Between sessions we stay in touch on WhatsApp. You send me videos, tell me how it's going and we adjust the plan. I don't consider the job done when the dog gets it right once, but when the change holds up in everyday life.
Does it always work?
No honest trainer can promise exactly the same result with every dog, because every dog and every family is different. What I can promise is full commitment, a plan designed for your situation and support until you see the change. That's why the families who trust me notice the difference. If you'd like to see some examples, take a look at the gallery or get in touch and tell me about your dog.
