What to ask before leaving your dog with a boarder

Going away and leaving your dog with someone else raises a lot of questions, and that's completely normal. I've been boarding dogs at home for a long time and I know what puts their families' minds at rest. These are the questions I'd ask before choosing a sitter.

1. Where will they sleep and spend the day?

Ask about the actual space: whether your dog will be indoors, whether they'll have a quiet spot to rest and how long they'll be left alone. A dog staying in a home, as one of the family, is usually more relaxed than one surrounded by lots of unfamiliar dogs.

2. Will there be other dogs?

Not every dog enjoys company. Ask how many dogs there will be at the same time and how they're introduced. A good sitter makes introductions calmly and knows when to keep dogs apart.

3. What will the walks be like?

Ask how many walks there will be each day, how long they'll last and whether your dog will be on or off the lead. If your dog has any quirks, like getting worked up around bikes or being scared of fireworks, mention it beforehand.

4. Will their routine be kept?

Bring their usual food and explain the times and amounts. Changing food suddenly can upset their stomach. Bring their bed or a blanket that smells of home too. It really helps on the first few nights.

5. What happens if they get ill?

Leave your vet's details in writing, along with any medication and allergies. Ask whether the sitter has canine first aid training and which emergency vet is nearby.

6. Will I get updates?

A photo and a message a day do wonders for your peace of mind. Ask about it directly. A good sitter will do it without being asked.

7. Can we meet first?

I always recommend a visit or a walk together beforehand. That way your dog gets to know the person and the place without any pressure, and you can see how they get on. It's the best way to know if it's the right fit.

Home boarding in Girona

At my home in the Barri Vell, dogs stay as part of the family, with daily walks, their usual routine and updates throughout their stay. If you like, we can also use the time to work on a habit, such as walking without pulling on the lead. Get in touch and we'll arrange a first visit.
